Even well-built patio heaters and fire pits can develop problems over time. Many issues are caused by normal wear, environmental exposure, or components that require cleaning, adjustment, or replacement. 

If the pilot or burner lights but goes out shortly afterward, the problem may involve the thermocouple, thermopile, pilot assembly, gas supply, or another safety component. Proper diagnosis helps identify the cause before replacing parts unnecessarily. 

A lack of ignition can result from a faulty igniter, worn electrode, damaged wiring, weak battery (where applicable), or other ignition-related components. Testing the ignition system helps determine the source of the problem.

A flame that appears smaller than normal or burns unevenly may be caused by restricted burner ports, debris, improper gas pressure, or worn components. Restoring proper flame characteristics helps improve heating performance.

Black soot on burners, decorative media, or nearby surfaces may indicate incomplete combustion or improper flame characteristics. This condition should be inspected before continued operation.

If you detect the smell of propane or natural gas around your appliance, discontinue use and do not attempt to relight the unit. The source of the odor should be identified and corrected before the appliance is placed back into service.
